About tamia stringfellow:
My name is Tamia Stringfellow, and I am a first-year MA student at the NYU Institute of Fine Arts, specializing in the History of Art and Archaeology. My academic focus is on contemporary Puerto Rican art and broader themes in African diasporic art across the Caribbean. I am particularly interested in exploring how art is shaped by multiple stages of colonization in Puerto Rico, examining questions like: How do traditions survive attempts at cultural erasure, and how do artists respond to these historical pressures in today’s society? I recently explored these questions in-depth during my research at UCLA’s Art History Honors Program. In addition to my passion for art history, I have a strong interest in fashion and design, both of which are deeply influenced by the artistic traditions I study. I draw inspiration from periods like Rococo, Pop Art, Gothic, and Art Nouveau, and I incorporate these aesthetic influences into my own work, whether I’m designing floral arrangements or styling outfits. My attention to detail and creative eye are skills I bring to everything I do, from curating art to personal design projects. As a driven and enthusiastic student, I am eager to expand my expertise and continue developing skills in fields that have captivated me from a young age. I am confident in my ability to contribute to a dynamic team, and I look forward to the opportunity to collaborate and learn more from others in the field. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Experience
Through my internships at Pence Gallery, Ethan Cohen Gallery, and AMRM Gallery, I have gained valuableexperience in gallery and exhibition production. I have developed a deep understanding of the behind-the-scenes work involved in curating, and I’ve learned how important it is to fill gaps in gallery spaceswith exhibits that reflect contemporary, multifaceted perspectives.
