About Sung Min Kim:
I've been with McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm, for the past 26 years. I spent first 8 years as an Executive Assistant / Team Assistant. While I was an EA, I attended business school as a part-time student and received my MBA degree in 2005. I spent the following 18 years as a Research Analyst, Specialist, and Expert serving clients in the Financial Services industry and also developing proprietary assets and insights. My skills include strategic planning, financial analysis, project management, market research, team management, problem solving, and payments industry knowledge.
Experience
For the past 18 years, I was part of McKinsey & Company's Payments practice (a subsector of McKinsey's Financial Services practice).
I first started out as a Research Analyst (May 2006 - Dec 2011). During this time, I delivered meticulously synthesized information, conducted detailed analysis, and offered valuable insights through research to McKinsey teams.
I was then promoted to a Knowledge Specialist (Jan 2012 - Jun 2015). As a KS, I played a pivotal role in shaping and refining internal knowledge, assets, and capabilities.
Next, I became a Knowledge Expert (Jul 2015 - Dec 2020) and created the proprietary McKinsey Credit Card Issuer Performance Model which became the industry standard for comparing issuer performance.
Finally, I was the Capabilities & Insights Expert (Jan 2021 - Feb 2025). It was heavily client facing role. My impact included: 1) assessing credit risk management for a top US credit card issuing client; 2) analyzing credit card customer lifecycle for a US credit card issuing client that led to an estimated impact of $60M in annual revenues due to increased acquisition, improved activation, increased transaction, and reduced customer churn; 3) performing market context analysis to support a bank client's negotiations with card network that delivered a 35-50% reduction in credit card issuing costs.
Before joining the Payments practice, I was an Executive Assistant / Team Assistant at McKinsey (Oct 1998 - May 2006). As an EA / TA, I maintained schedules, coordinated travel to optimize time, and handled time and expense reports for McKinsey Partners. I also spearheaded special projects, including internet research, surveys, and team training initiatives. My other duties included creating and delivering client communication presentations and serving as primary liaison between clients and internal teams.
Education
I have MBA from Baruch College - Zicklin School of Business specializing in Finance & Investments (Feb 2005)
