About Ry Newbauer:

I am a dynamic and mission-driven science educator with over a decade of experience in teaching, curriculum development, research, and student mentorship. With a Master of Science in Biology and a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry—along with minors in Biology, Psychology, and Music—I bring a multidisciplinary, research-informed approach to education that bridges rigorous academics with practical application and social-emotional learning.

Currently serving as a Biology and Financial Algebra teacher at Cristo Rey San Diego High School, I specialize in delivering differentiated, equity-focused instruction to multilingual and first-generation college-bound students. My teaching incorporates modern strategies such as Math Language Routines, science engineering practices, and total participation techniques to build engagement and resilience. Previously, as Department Chair at Rochester Academy Charter School, I led a transformation in science instruction, resulting in a 46% increase in state exam pass rates and the creation of an innovative “Science of Technology” course integrating STEM theory with hands-on learning in 3D printing, circuitry, and residential engineering.

My instructional philosophy is grounded in the belief that education is both a rigorous academic pursuit and a profound social calling. I aim to cultivate not only content mastery but also curiosity, integrity, and emotional maturity in my students. Having grown up in a single-parent household reliant on government assistance, I understand the life-changing potential of education. These formative experiences fuel my commitment to serving students from diverse backgrounds with high expectations, consistent support, and a classroom culture of mutual respect.

My scientific foundation includes extensive research experience in molecular biology, most notably a graduate thesis investigating the phosphatase activity of Trypanosoma brucei, the parasite responsible for African Sleeping Sickness. I am skilled in DNA extraction, site-directed mutagenesis, protein purification, and enzyme assays, and I integrate this expertise into lab-based learning environments that meet NGSS and college-readiness standards.

I hold an Arizona Subject Matter Expert Credential (grades 6–12) and am pursuing California certification. I’ve also received the Carl A. Whiteman Jr. Teaching Award from the University of Rochester for excellence in chemistry instruction and lab safety.

Beyond the classroom, I have a strong record of leadership, curriculum development, and community engagement. I’ve managed science department budgets, built lab infrastructure, mentored new teachers, and maintained ongoing communication with families. I also own and operate Newbauer Piano and Tutoring, where I provide instruction in STEM, piano, and music theory.

Whether in the lab, classroom, or community, my goal is to inspire students to become lifelong learners, servant leaders, and confident thinkers equipped to make meaningful contributions to the world. I am now seeking opportunities to continue this mission within an institution that values innovation, faith, and the holistic development of young minds.

Experience

I am a passionate and versatile science educator with a Master of Science in Biology, a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry, and over a decade of experience in research, teaching, and leadership. My instructional practice bridges academic rigor with creativity, emotional intelligence, and equity-driven pedagogy.

Currently, I teach Biology and Financial Algebra at Cristo Rey San Diego High School, where I support multilingual learners through differentiated instruction, strong family engagement, and innovative classroom strategies. Previously, I served as Department Chair at Rochester Academy Charter School, where I designed and taught advanced science courses—including Chemistry, Physics, and Anatomy & Physiology—and led a 46% increase in student exam pass rates. I also developed a “Science of Technology” course blending practical engineering with scientific theory, helping students apply STEM concepts to real-world challenges.

My scientific background includes research on Trypanosoma brucei enzyme function, where I conducted protein purification, site-directed mutagenesis, and enzyme assays. This research foundation informs my lab-based, inquiry-driven approach to science education.

I hold an Arizona Subject Matter Expert Credential (6–12 Science) and am pursuing California certification. My work is guided by a belief in high expectations, mutual respect, and the transformative power of education—especially for students from underserved backgrounds.

In all roles, I strive to mentor students not only as scholars, but as compassionate, resilient, and capable young adults. I am now seeking mission-aligned opportunities to continue this work in dynamic, faith-based or STEM-focused learning environments.

Education

I hold a Master of Science in Biology from SUNY Brockport (2021), where I conducted thesis research on the phosphatase enzyme TbLpn in Trypanosoma brucei, focusing on protein purification, site-directed mutagenesis, and enzymatic assays. I also earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry from the University of Rochester (2019), with minors in Biology, Music, and Psychology. My undergraduate coursework included genetics, microbiology, biochemistry, and physical chemistry, supported by extensive laboratory experience.
