Katherine Mothes

I have a passion for working with artists and facilitating exhibitions, from curating major group shows in collaboration with other organizers to working one-on-one with artists to produce major solo exhibitions, playing a hand in launching several careers. I also deeply enjoy writing about art, conducting, conducting interviews, making studio visits, and finding ways to express artists' ideas to the public.

I was raised in the Upper Midwest in a family of artists and pursued study in fine art and the history of art at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Edinburgh, after which I returned to my hometown to develop independent work—often interspersed with short stints elsewhere and increasingly nomadic travel for curatorial projects. After two more years spent in Scotland, I have just returned to the U.S. and am excited to see what lies ahead.
 

Through Young Space, a contemporary arts curatorial platform I founded and facilitated between 2014 and 2022, I’ve become part of an extensive global network of artists, gallerists, collectors, curators, and creatives. Now, I run Dovetail Magazine, an online publication focused on pathways between visual art and place that spun off of Young Space in 2020.

I am also currently a part-time contributing editor for Colossal and a freelance (temporary) communications strategist for The Bubbler at Madison Public Library, where I have been responsible for building a new website. I continue to curate exhibitions independently, in collaboration with galleries and artist-run initiatives.
 

I have a MSc in the History of Art, Theory and Display from the University of Edinburgh (2014) and a BS in Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2008).
