About Josephine Newman:

I am a Philly-based artist and educator, interested in teaching all ages of students about the importance and impact of art making and process based learning. In May of 2023, I graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Art Education and minor in Art History from the Temple University Honors program and Tyler School of Art and Architecture. Within my art practice, I focus on the romanticization of nostalgia through the use of all types of mediums including painting, drawing, ceramics, fibers, and jewelry. Art is always there for me when crises arise, and I need an outlet. It can serve as a constant for my students too.

Experience

I am very interested in teaching and community engagement. I have experience teaching art camps at Staub Art Studio in Catonsville, Maryland and experience in teaching through my field placements at Central High School, Woodrow Wilson Elementary School and Cramp Elementary School in Philadelphia. Through these teaching experiences, I have learned how to engage with students, have developed lesson plans, and have interacted with fellow artists. I also have been working at the Tyler School of Art and Architecture's admissions office for four years, where I have given tours and information sessions about Tyler programs and facilities. As an admissions ambassador, I engaged with my community, communicated with students and professors, and developed stellar customer service skills.

Education

At the Tyler School of Art and Architecture at Temple University, I have expanded my passion for teaching and art history. I recently graduated from Temple's Honors program with a Bachelor of Science in Art Education and minor in Art History. I have extensive experience in multiple artistic mediums. I have taken courses in fibers, ceramics, jewelry, painting, and drawing, and am consistently seeking new ways to create art. I believe that my experience in teaching and curriculum creation, my interpersonal skills, and my knowledge of art history will allow me to excel in this position.
