Education / Training
About José Ayerve:
Though I am originally from South America, I grew up and studied in the United States. I attended Bowdoin College and earned my degree in Romance Languages (Spanish and French) and Latin American Studies. My business, AYERVE Inc., offers translation, interpretation, editing, and writing services to several clients including public school systems, government contractors, private educational companies, and more. I have spent 7 of the last 8 years living abroad in Quito, Ecuador. I am currently based in South Florida, but continue to work remotely with a couple of clients abroad, in one case, creating and editing blogs and other content for a leading destination management company in South America. Throughout middle and high school, I participated in the production of a local television show in Springfield, Massachusetts, where I grew up. I also took part in a summer journalism workshop based at the University of Massachusetts in Boston. Also, I am an audio engineer and voiceover artist, having dedicated much of my time to music production and, more recently, to voiceover work.
Experience
Since I was old enough to work, I have held numerous jobs and worked in several different arenas. These days, I focus on using my language skills to serve clients in public education, data privacy and protection, public policy, and tourism. I have mostly been working on my own as a contractor. Occasionally, I have worked for other companies, usually while maintaining positive relationships with my existing clients. I am a hard worker, self-motivated, and eager to please. With regard to my work, I am more concerned with details, accuracy, and quality than with quantity, however, I understand that efficiency and production require speed, concentration, and adherence to timelines. I have learned a lot about working with others and on my own, having spent the better part of 15 years working diligently in music production, while balancing, expanding, and honing my skills as a translator and interpreter. Because my skillset is so dynamic, I am able to adapt to different projects and learn quickly.
Education
In 2013, I studied medical interpreting via a months-long course online. This was a real eye-opening experience. There was a great deal of vocabulary I needed to study, in addition to best practices for interpreting in a health-related setting. Everything I learned through this program helped me improve as a translator and, of course, as an interpreter. Currently, I handle an average of 10-15 interpreter sessions each week. Though I studied both simultaneous and consecutive styles of interpreting, what I primarily use on a regular basis is consecutive. This is perhaps my most "relevant education" to date.
