About John Shelby:

I am currently a junior at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, majoring in biomedical engineering with dual concentrations in mechanical and electrical engineering. Over time, I've come to realize that I thrive in maintaining a rigorous and structured daily schedule, which has been a key factor in driving my success across multiple areas. Academically, I hold an unweighted 3.91 GPA. Beyond academics, I've pursued a wide range of interests, from working to break into the top 300 of national tennis rankings for my age group, to founding my own company and managing the international production of a charitable board game. I have had 3 past engineering internships and I've also invested over 200 hours as a volunteer math tutor for the special needs division of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and have gained valuable experience through diverse employment roles. Although I take pride in these accomplishments, I'm driven by the belief that they will pale in comparison to my future achievements in the field of biomedical engineering.

Experience

MSI, 2024: Contributed to manufacturing advanced medical devices, focusing on catheter and stent production and testing, including hydraulic burst, trackability, torque resistance, and radial compression tests. Designed and assembled machinery for production, using 3D modeling and CAD to optimize device reliability and functionality. Engaged in R&D, designing stents and catheters to enhance flexibility and deployment accuracy, collaborating with cross-functional teams to drive innovation in cardiovascular treatments.

Boston University, Summer 2023: Worked with the WHO to develop an aptamer-based immunoassay to detect toxic Diethylene Glycol in pharmaceuticals, addressing critical global health risks. Enhanced electrochemical testing protocols, achieving high sensitivity and accuracy. Utilized analytical techniques like GC and TLC to validate assay performance, supporting drug safety and regulatory standards.

Colorado State University (CSU), 2021: Assisted in 3D modeling, prototyping, and testing of medical device components, collaborating with engineers to optimize functionality and performance. Gained experience in CAD and 3D printing for design validation, troubleshooting, and component integration. Shadowed R&D engineers to learn about rapid prototyping for accelerated product development in the biomedical field.

CEO of Save the Wildcats LLC: Developed Save the Wildcats, a cooperative board game promoting big cat conservation, with profits supporting Panthera's anti-poaching efforts. Oversaw mass production, retail partnerships, and charity collaborations, dedicating 1000+ hours to design, 3D modeling, animation, playtesting, production logistics, and IP management.
