About John Scheuring:
I am a research support professional seeking to return to the medical science enterprise. My scientific expertise, experience with biochemical procedures, communication capabilities, and natural inclination to leadership roles make me a strong candidate for senior research technician positions.
I previously worked as a lead research technician for three years at Howard Hughes Medical Institute where I was responsible for coordinating research operations in a structural biology laboratory. I acquired expertise with biochemical and molecular procedures including PCR amplification, agarose gel electrophoresis, vector cloning, DNA extraction, bacterial transformation, DNA sequencing preparation, viral transfection, column protein purification, western blotting, and biochemical assays. I also coordinated all cell culturing operations for maintenance of insect and mammalian cell strains. Other laboratory support tasks included routine examination of the laboratory to ensure safety compliance, calibrating equipment, replenishing research material supplies, autoclaving sterile materials, and producing buffer solutions for laboratory staff.
As a genetic counseling student at Rutgers University, I completed coursework in medical terminology, genetic testing technology, motivational interviewing, and empathic communication. I have also completed training in EPIC EHR, ePHI confidentiality, and human subject research ethics and safety compliance.
Currently, I am a board member and public relations volunteer for a nonprofit organization that supports Huntington's disease research and community programs. I lead social media outreach and marketing campaigns, design graphics and flyers, and collaborate with event planning - raising over $50,000 in funds so far.
My goal is to contribute to the advancement of our medical technology applications. I am motivated and always looking to further develop my research support skills. I have skills in biochemical procedures, cell culturing, laboratory support, data analysis, and scientific presentation as well as customer service etiquette, data management, and scientific training.
Experience
I have extensive experience culturing cells for academic research purposes, adhering to strict and thorough aseptic procedures while maintaining human and insect cell strain growth to meet weekly demands. I was responsible for producing high-nutrient media, initiating new cell strains routinely, cryopreserving cell lines for future use, and routinely sampling cell lines for quality control testing. Dr. Leemor Joshua-Tor’s laboratory held a prestigious reputation for producing copious amounts of high-quality protein products, enough so that we became involved in the production of SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein production for vaccine and therapeutic development, and I insistently strove to uphold our reputation through my cell culturing responsibilities.
I later joined the Juno Genetics preimplantation genetic diagnosis company as an office administrator, acquiring insight into the administrative functions necessary for successful industrial laboratory practices. Furthermore, my role keenly developed interpersonal skills conducive to team collaboration towards scientific success including how to efficiently communicate information, adapt to altered departmental priorities on demand, and maintain positive team morale.
Education
I have completed my bachelor's in Biology at New York University, concentrating in biochemistry and genetics. I completed laboratory coursework in cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry, chemistry, and organic chemistry. Additionally, I conducted a grant-funded, independent study analyzing the expression patterns of developmental genes in Drosophila embryos.
Awards include admission into the Presidential Scholars Program elicited to the top 10% of the class as well as the Expository Writing departmental award for the Spring 2015 semester.
