Jo walker

Jo is a graduate student studying Environmental Justice at the University of Michigan, with experience in teaching, organizing, community engagement, communications, and scientific research. As a Graduate Student Instructor, she has demonstrated leadership by designing and facilitating lab lessons on topics such as food justice, environmental justice, and equitable climate change solutions. By mentoring students, fostering relationships with community partners, and organizing experiential learning opportunities, she has helped bridge classroom learning with practical applications.

Jo’s scientific research background includes conducting fieldwork as an assistant researcher, where she collected soil and water samples to investigate ecological processes and environmental issues. She has extensive experience with data analysis, literature reviews, and developing original research methodologies. Her ability to integrate quantitative and qualitative approaches has deepened her understanding of complex environmental systems and informed her commitment to evidence-based solutions.

Her community engagement experience includes grassroots organizing and an internship where she led the design and installation of a food forest in Wakulla, FL. Through focus groups, interviews, and youth programming, she collaborated with community members to co-create a project that addresses food security challenges.

In her role as a Communications and Media Assistant for the School for Environment and Sustainability, Jo develops original media, including alumni profiles and narratives that spotlight environmental justice and sustainability. She combines storytelling and strong writing skills to produce impactful digital and social media content with the aim to catalyze dialogue on important environmental justice issues.

She is passionate about pursuing a career that centers environmental justice, leveraging her skills in storytelling, community engagement, collaboration, and scientific research to promote social justice.
