About Jill Makowski:
My career as a Pharmacist has been very rewarding. Having started out as a staff hospital pharmacist, I was confident I was providing the highest level of pharmaceutical care possible. Each day was a challenge to ensure safety and accuracy in the medication delivery process. I then was blessed to be able to serve my community in the retail pharmacy setting. The experience in this hands-on setting was gratifying in the immediate patient interaction and impact I could make to an individual. This left a lasting impression on me, in the power my skills and role could provide to the underserved community, many of whom only have access to a pharmacist for their medical concerns. As my career progressed into a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Infectious Disease, I was afforded not only to work side by side with our Infectious Disease Physicians in bedside patient care but was able to see the impact on the community resistance patterns of our Antimicrobial Stewardship efforts when we pull together as a team. The ability to make a significant change in a relatively short timeframe was intoxicating. I knew then I could do more for my communitywhen resources were pooled and a common effort was focused.
In excess of 25 years, I have served my community as a registered pharmacist, I have been able to touch the lives of many patients and customers in the many roles I have filled: immunizer, counselor, advocate, and clinician. I know there is more I can do for this community as a whole as part of the right effort. More for my patients, more for my institution, more for my community overall. This is where my MBA with a focus in Organizational Leadership and a Certification in Health Care Compliance enter my career path. These are the tools I see as providing me with the skills I need to take my skills to the next level and do even more for my patients and be the most productive member of the team. The ability to protect the individuals and serve the community in a way which expands beyond my current role is a very exciting prospect. The partnership I have established with the current Chief Compliance Officer and the Compliance team at Southcoast has shown me how I can protect the organization, while helping establish new goals and broader reach into the community. Projects I have been tackling as part of this team include Conflict of Interest and Code of Conduct for the organization.
My current role has afforded me many opportunities to educate providers, nurses, laboratory staff and clinical teams on new regulations and processes to address changing clinical needs for our patients. The auditing and monitoring of the changes over time with formal reporting to Quality committees and follow up education has prepared me for a full-time role in Compliance which I now have the credentialing to undertake. Though I do enjoy my current position, I have advanced my education in order to make more of a difference in patient safety, quality of care and patient access on a larger level than what it currently affords me. The development of the antimicrobial stewardship program from the ground up in the last 8 years to an IDSA Center of Excellent recognized program proves my ability to lead a multidisciplinary team to enhance change, safety, and quality. I look forward to this next step in my career focused on patient access, quality of care and regulatory compliance.
Thank you for considering my application.
