About Jennifer Scott:

To Whom It May Concern,

I would like to inquire about the position for Clinical Educator. I have fifteen years of experience as a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist with a diverse wealth of experiences. For thirteen years I worked in a separate, public, day school with students who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), have a diagnosis of Autism, and/or deaf and hard of hearing at New Horizons Center for Autism. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was employed at Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters outpatient department but was one of the few therapists providing AAC evaluations. During my career, I have developed skills related to AAC ranging from assessment with both the hospital and the school divisions to programming and treatment with low tech and high tech AAC. I have participated in T-TAC Region's 2 & 3 Assistive Technology Network and worked alongside AT Specialists from the six school divisions on the Peninsula. I have experience with treatment using best practices aiding persons who need to supplement or replace speech for those with impairments in the production of spoken or written language. I have worked on AAC evaluations as a team, which is completed with both speech therapists and occupational therapists and wrote AAC reports, compiling funding documents, and summarizing the present level of performance for patients to submit to insurance companies to receive funding for AAC devices. Most recently I have been working as a contract employee both virtually and in-person with public school districts in Oregon and Virginia.

As part of an interdisciplinary team, I have developed and implemented both individualized and group therapy for elementary, middle-school, and high-school students with communication impairments, language delays, articulation disorders, fluency impairments, deaf and hard of hearing, and autism-spectrum disorders. I have experience with teletherapy and private practice.

I am familiar with case management and the individualized education plan (IEP) process to include writing and implementing the IEP, goals, and objectives for Speech-Language Impairment, persons with autism spectrum disorders, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, intellectual disabilities, and other health impairments. I have experience with Assistive Technology Assessments using the Student Environment Task Tools (SETT) model and the VCU Autism Center for Excellence procedures. I have used video modeling and positive behavior intervention and support (PBIS) practices to manage the learning environment. Some other examples of evidence-based practices related to working with students with ASD that I have used and still use are visual supports and schedules, positive reinforcement, working in classrooms, modeling, prompting, scripting, and functional communication training. Finally, I have also had experience supervising graduate students during their clinical externships and therapists who are clinical fellows.

In the past I was a Certified Autism Specialist and have joined the special interest group related to augmentative communication and am pursuing continuing education related to AAC and autism. I am very interested in this position as I currently live in Norfolk and have had family attend ODU. I have my CCCs and hold a Master of Education in Speech-Language Pathology from the University of Virginia. I am enclosing my resume. I would love to discuss my work and volunteer experience as well as how I may be an asset to your program.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Jen
