About Isabella Morizio:

I am a third-year undergraduate student at Northeastern University pursuing the study of Mechanical Engineering. I am projected to graduate in 2025 with ambitions of focusing my engineering career in the aerospace or energy industry.

I have a focus on global education that started with a study abroad experience in Rome, Italy the fall of 2017. I then participated in a three-week cultural immersion program in the Kingdom of Bhutan where I studied renewable energy technology and politics of sustainability. I was recently accepted into a four-week program in Bergen, Norway where I will study engineering computation and design methods that harness clean energy.

I began an educational concentration in robotics at Choate Rosemary Hall where I gained three years of experience with FIRST Robotics. I became a team lead during my final year of participation where I was responsible for teaching skills, delegating tasks, and ensuring the progression of our project. This experience allowed me to fine tune my interpersonal and leadership skils.

I am continuing my engineering education at Northeastern University where I became involved with the 2021 NASA Moon to Mars Ice Prospecting Challenge. For this project, I worked with my team to design a system that simulated the drilling, melting, extracting, and filtration of sub-surface ice on Mars. I focused on testing operations where I designed, prototyped, and fabricated several mechanisms. Towards the conclusion of the project I contributed to main portions of the system's technical paper that is in the process of being published. I am currently continuing my extracurricular involvement as a member of Northeastern University's Society of Women Engineers.

In summary, I am a highly motivated and driven individual with a strong desire to expand my educational and professional experiences. Please feel free to connect with me!

Experience

Experience Summary:

I am a third-year mechanical engineering student at Northeastern University in Boston, MA, USA. I have nearly completed all required coursework related to my major including courses such as chemistry, material science, energy systems, thermodynamics, and more. My most relevant engineering and professional experience is as follows.

Jun. 2018: Bhutan Sustainability and Renewable Energy Program

As a participant in an academic cultural immersion program at my high school, I traveled to the small Kingdom of Bhutan. The purpose of the program was to study environmental protection laws, facets of sustainability, cultural traditions, and political life in the world-renowned country. Bhutan is the only carbon negative country in the world, and so I spent two weeks immersing myself in understanding the complex relationships between the country’s people, spirituality, politics, economics, and climate policies. I spoke with the founder of the Gross National Happiness index, religious monks, hydropower engineers, biodiversity specialists, political leaders, and perhaps the best of all, local Bhutanese people. The cumulation of this trip taught me one thing above all. There is infinite value that stems out of learning from new cultures and the people that comprise them.

Sep. 2020 - Oct. 2021: NASA Moon to Mars Ice Prospecting Challenge

The NASA MMIP Challenge is a competition for undergraduate teams to design fabricate, and test a system that simulates the extraction of water on sub-planetary surfaces. I worked with a team to create the PARSEC system: a Percussive and Rotary Surveying and Extracting Carousel. PARSEC includes three main subsystems: drilling, melting and extraction, and filtration. Portions of the system I worked on include a masonry auger drilling mechanism, an articulating and rotating melting tool, and a filtration system equipped with a reverse osmosis filter. I also focused heavily on testing operations. I designed and fabricated a testing bed that supported the nearly 70 kg system. To follow this work I prototyped and designed several 3D-printed mechanisms that allowed for optimal testing of the system. Finally, I wrote the main portions of our winning technical paper and contributed heavily to our technical poster that ultimately won 2nd place in the competition.

May 2022 - Jun. 2022: Engineering Computation and Design to Harness Clean Energy Program

For two months this past year I participated in a school-sponsored study abroad program in Norway where I took full courses in mechanical computation and design. During my time this renewable energy hub I seized every opportunity to immerse myself in the culture surrounding clean energy systems. I engaged with the founders and employees of many clean energy companies such as Evoy, the Bergen Offshore Wind Center, and Ocean Highway Cluster. I conducted in-depth finite element analysis as well as solid modeling load simulations on wind turbine composite material structures for the main portion of my course load. Aside from academics I had countless adventures such as scaling the inside of an industrial wind turbine, meeting reindeer in the arctic circle, hiking up fjords, swimming in waterfalls, and meetings many locals. The Norwegian commitment to renewable energy ignited an alacrity of mine to search for career opportunities in this field.

Jul. 2022 - Dec. 2022: Full-Time Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Engineer at Greensight

I completed a full-time 6-month internship at Greensight, a drone tech startup company based in Boston, MA. During my time at Greensight, I gained a myriad of experiences that built my foundational engineering skills robustly. I earned my government-issued pilot's license and flew hundreds of drones both remotely all around the world and on the field in Boston. I developed 5+ series of sensor mounting hardware parts using CAD solid modeling software. These sensor mounts were rapidly prototyped and then fabricated with various techniques including 3D printing, laser cutting, welding, machining, and more. My most in-depth field while at Greensight was electrical engineering and optics. I designed and integrated an electrical system into a mechanical test-cutting fixture. This required design work in Altium Viewer, physical work with soldering and wiring, and programming work with Raspberry Pi and Python. Ultimately, my full-time engineering position allowed me to gain valuable experience in several key engineering fields including mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, and software.
