Willard Middle School January 2014 - May 2014As an English teacher in a local middle school in Berkeley, California (U.S.), I did the following:
Executed the theory and practice of teaching English (sentence construction, grammar, etc.) to a group of 8th
grade students in Willard Middle School (Berkeley, CA) who had failed their English classes.
Learned how to address class issues such as behavior management, lack of motivation, low self-esteem, and low
academic performance through a weekly seminar from the programs leading facilitators.
Held weekly one-on-one academic counseling with one specific student on academic probation to discuss
ways to improve learning, studying, and test taking.
Constructed and corrected writing-based homework assignments to improve form and style of writing.
Organized various study schedules that balance mentees academic demands with social realities of being a single
parent, and realize the goal of transferring from a 2-year institution to a 4-year one.
Taught syntax and grammar to ESL students (about 20 per week) through interdisciplinary learning, such as
incorporating music, popular cultural references, and technology into tutoring lessons.
Developed a guided writing approach to be utilized during tutoring sessions to gradually strengthen students
heuristic abilities to self-improve constructing and correcting written papers.
Implemented interactive oral discussions to boost tutees critical thinking and solidify modes of argumentation
for argument-based writing assignments.
