About Fabian Almazan:
Fabian Almazan is a jazz pianist, composer, and founder of Biophilia Records. Currently pursuing a PhD at Harvard, he explores Cuban music’s intersection with nature, climate, and cultural identity. His work includes innovative instrument design, blending acoustic and electronic elements, multimedia performance, and compositions inspired by environmental awareness, folklore, and interdisciplinary creativity.
Experience
Fabian Almazan is a GRAMMY-nominated pianist, composer, photographer, educator, and researcher with extensive experience in jazz performance, composition, arranging, film scoring, and visual arts. He founded Biophilia Records, which emphasizes arts innovation and environmental sustainability. His artistic achievements include solo photography exhibitions at The Jazz Gallery that address environmental issues like extinction and ecological challenges.
Fabian has received significant awards and grants, including the Radcliffe Engaged Student Grant and multiple Copland Recording Fund Grants. His discography includes acclaimed projects both as a leader and collaborator, featuring artists such as Terence Blanchard, Dave Douglas, and Linda May Han Oh. His film work includes original scores and piano performances for notable projects such as HBO’s “Treme” and films like “Harriet” and “One Night In Miami.” Additionally, Fabian has demonstrated entrepreneurship and innovation by developing sustainable packaging solutions and founding the IMPACTS Commissioning Series.
Education
Fabian Almazan is currently completing his PhD in Creative Practice & Critical Inquiry at Harvard University, with interdisciplinary research centered on environmental themes in music and art. As a Teaching Fellow at Harvard, he has been instrumental in curriculum development and instruction across various courses. Fabian also holds a Master’s and Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Piano Performance from Manhattan School of Music and completed a fellowship in Jazz Piano Performance at the Brubeck Institute. His teaching experience spans prestigious institutions such as The New School, NYU, Manhattan School of Music, and international masterclasses and workshops at MIT, Princeton University, Sibelius Academy, and beyond.
