About Ethan Abercrombie:
I am an ecologist with a PhD in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology from Washington University in St. Louis, specializing in biodiversity, spatial analysis, and ecological modeling. My research explores montane β-diversity and the drivers of species turnover across some of Earth’s most biodiverse regions. Skilled in GIS, R, and reproducible data pipelines, I combine strong technical expertise with extensive fieldwork experience in canopy ecology, biodiversity monitoring, and vegetation surveys. I have authored multiple scientific papers, secured competitive fellowships including the NSF GRFP, and thrive at communicating science through writing, presentations, and mentorship.
Experience
I am an ecologist with expertise in biodiversity research, spatial analysis, and ecological modeling. During my PhD, I led multiple independent research projects, producing peer-reviewed publications, grant-funded studies, and reproducible R-based analytical pipelines. My experience spans field ecology—including canopy access, biodiversity monitoring, and vegetation surveys—as well as advanced GIS and statistical analyses. I co-founded and led a student scientific society, managed collaborative international research projects in Costa Rica, and mentored undergraduates in climate and biodiversity studies. My work has been supported by competitive awards, including the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship.
Education
I hold a PhD in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology from Washington University in St. Louis, where my research centered on montane β-diversity and biodiversity patterns across spatial and temporal scales. I also earned a B.S. in Biology with an emphasis in Ecology & Biodiversity, graduating Summa Cum Laude from Humboldt State University.
