Non-profit / Volunteering
About Emily Thabes:
I am an experienced museum and nonprofit leader with over two decades of success advancing public institutions through visionary, values-driven leadership. Currently serving as Executive Director of the Beltrami County Historical Society, I steward a collection of over one million artifacts, images, and records while leading efforts in repatriation, digitization, education, and equity-centered interpretation.
My work centers on creating inclusive, resilient cultural organizations that connect history to community well-being. I bring expertise in grant writing, team development, strategic planning, and stakeholder collaboration—skills honed through senior leadership roles in libraries, higher education, and the public sector. I have managed budgets up to $3M, launched award-winning educational programs, and championed access and equity initiatives across disciplines.
A passionate advocate for public history, I believe museums are civic anchors: places for truth-telling, dialogue, and intergenerational connection. I am now seeking a leadership role within a Canadian institution where I can contribute to cultural preservation, community engagement, and sustainable growth.
Experience
I bring over 20 years of experience leading museums, libraries, and nonprofits, focusing on strategic growth, cultural stewardship, and community-centered service. As Executive Director of the Beltrami County Historical Society, I oversee a vast artifact collection, lead fundraising and preservation efforts, and guide repatriation initiatives in alignment with NAGPRA. My background includes senior leadership in large public library systems, higher education, consulting, managing teams of up to 35 staff, multimillion-dollar budgets, and nationally recognized programs. I specialize in building inclusive, impact-driven organizations that connect history to the needs of diverse communities.
Education
I hold a Master of Library and Information Science from Florida State University and a Master of Interdisciplinary Leadership from Creighton University, equipping me with advanced skills in cultural leadership, organizational strategy, and public service. I am also nearing completion of the Small Museum Pro! Certificate through the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH), having completed four of five courses in collections management, financial oversight, public access, and museum education, demonstrating my continued commitment to excellence in small and community-based museum leadership.
