7 Tips for Nannies

  1. Please arrive on time! Your boss is depending on you.
  2. There will be no deception. If you are running late or will be unable to work due to illness, call as soon as possible. Plan your personal days - don't call in ill the day after a performance at the last minute; instead, request that day off in advance. Your boss organises his or her work schedule around yours, and he or she needs time to juggle commitments as well. Be truthful and upfront — the most common reason for a nanny's termination is dishonesty.
  3. Give it your all and always complete your tasks. Leaving the snack dishes in the sink is not acceptable!
  4. Plan ahead and communicate. Are you running out of diapers? Have you finished the last of the milk? Notify your manager. I need to make a regular doctor's visit. Before you schedule, ask your boss if there are any times that would be more convenient for her. Don't show up to work on Monday and say that you have a scheduled appointment at 3 p.m. the next day. This has an effect on your employer's work and career as well!
  5. Maintain an optimistic attitude. "I'll try" conveys a far more negative message than "I'll do my best." It's contagious to have a bright grin and a positive attitude. Every job will present problems from time to time. Consider possible remedies before approaching your manager with a concern. Propose the solution that you believe is the most effective – and be willing to consider your employer's point of view. Instead of moaning and groaning to a friend about a problem, moan and groan to a friend about it.
  6. Don't spread rumours. Keep your employer's information private. Never publish anything on Facebook or any other social networking site that might humiliate you if your boss found out. Without the parents' explicit permission, do not post images of your charges or identify them by name.
  7. Recognize opportunities to assist others and volunteer whenever possible. Isn't it time to replenish the milk supply? When you're out on a walk, offer to pick up a gallon of milk at the market. Have you just finished the last box of baby wipes? Make a note for your boss or add it to the family grocery list. You know your boss won't be home until 6 p.m., but there's a soccer practise at 6:30 p.m. Offer to make a basic supper for your charge and the parent or to bring a sandwich.
