Chenella Perez

I’m from Tampa, Florida and a proud graduate of the University of Central Florida, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science. My passion for science was first sparked by the film Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story, and it’s only grown stronger since. I chose cytology because of the connection I felt while working in the lab during my undergraduate chemistry and microbiology courses. There was something incredibly engaging about the hands-on work, the precision, and the quiet intensity of lab life that drew me in. What truly solidified my decision, though, was learning how cytologists play a vital role in early disease detection helping to save lives and improve patient outcomes through their detailed, behind-the-scenes work.

As I’ve progressed through the program, I’ve come to appreciate just how much critical thinking, analytical skill, and problem-solving goes into every case. It feels like building a complex puzzle, where each slide holds a clue and every detail matters. I’m constantly challenged and inspired, and I find purpose in knowing that my work could be the first step in someone’s path to healing.

I have gained valuable experience in healthcare and administrative roles, including working as a medical receptionist at Winter Park Vision Specialist, where I assisted patients, managed calls, provided Spanish translation, and handled insurance billing. I also worked as a receptionist at Greenway Kia East, managing phone systems and performing administrative tasks, and as a title clerk at EVO Motors, coordinating paperwork and communication between departments. Additionally, I have demonstrated leadership and community involvement as President of my sorority chapter, organizing outreach events, and volunteered as an advocate advising clients on developmental and health-related issues.
