About Benjamin Clark:

Hello! My name is Benjamin Clark, and I am from Seneca, South Carolina, USA. In May 2023, I will graduate from Clemson University with Bachelor's Degrees in Biochemistry and Genetics. I plan to attend medical school starting in August 2025 to become an Emergency Medicine Physician. Until then, I plan to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in Taiwan. I am TEFL certified and have 1 year of experience teaching group sessions. In my free time I enjoy playing piano, listening to Jay Chou, and helping my friends from China practice their English.

Experience

President of Clemson Biochemistry and Genetics Club
2021-2022. Recruited guest speakers to present their biochemistry and genetics research to interested undergraduate students at biweekly meetings. Arranged fieldtrips to the Clemson Center for Human Genetics (Greenwood, SC) and Arthrex (Anderson, SC). Facilitated exposure of undergraduate students to various topics in biochemistry and genetics research through research presentations given by graduate students, physicians, and academic researchers in the field.

Board Member for Clemson CHANGE Student Organization

2021. Ethics Editorial Co-Author
2020-21 Served as a representative for the College of Science for CHANGE (Creating Habits and Norms Guiding Ethical Decisions) – the Rutland Institute’s student ethics committee. Co-authored the 2021 CHANGE Ethics Editorial on the ethics of online proctoring (OP) software, such as Lockdown Browser, through the most applicable tenets of ethics: transparency and non-maleficence.


Research Thesis in Biochemistry
2022-2023. Research thesis under Dr. Haiying Liang at Clemson University. Promoter comparison of 4 genes encoding transcription factors that regulate seed development genes in Camelina sativa and Arabidopsis thaliana. Expression analysis by RT-qPCR to measure tissue-specific expression levels of these genes in C. sativa.


Center for Human Genetics Summer Intern
Summer 2022 Executed preliminary screening of fly lines for resistance to heavy metals as part of a team. These experiments are an early contribution to the ongoing EU grant funded PrecisionTox project. Constructed a gene association network of heavy metal resistance orthologs in humans and notable model organisms. Presented project at a poster forum.


Corn Genomics Summer Intern
Summer 2020 Worked in a team under the guidance of Dr. Rajandeep Sekhon. Responsibilities included maintenance and data collection of maize at the Clemson Bottoms and Simpson Field. Duties included tagging crops for identification, shoot bagging to control pollination, hoeing for weed control, stalk preparation, and data collection for senescence and stalk lodging. ~20hrs/week

Undergraduate TA/Grader for Calculus II
Fall 2020 Grader for all assignments besides exams for this section. Assignments included twice-a-week learning activities and weekly written homework assignments. Communicated with students to ensure transparency in grading. Aided students by answering questions and walking through example problems for learning activities in class. ~10hrs/week


Peer-Assisted Leader for Calculus I
2021-22 Conducted open, collaborative sessions twice per week to help students master course material and become more confident, independent learners Collaborated with professors of supported sections to optimize session effectiveness. PAL is a peer-led program affiliated with the ASC for students in historically challenging undergraduate courses. ~10hrs/week
