Amirah Kane

Born and raised in New Jersey, I am a Muslim, artist, poet, student, musician, and freelance writer. My work emphasizes the triumphs and challenges of being black in America, as presented through the perspectives of other people. I like to create and re-create alternative windows of the mind with words, music, experiences, or whatever abstract thoughts come to my mind. I’m driven to find ways to connect art to its audience through the communication of poetry.

My poetry explores the triumphs and trials of being black and living in the inner-city. My work is highly influenced by hip-hop music, as I try to lace my expressions with rap references, cultural phrases, and easter eggs that B-Boys/Girls like me will appreciate. While my love for music is rooted in Neo-Soul, my way of expressing myself is influenced by Hip-Hop and R&B. I am a Muslima; however, I still try to express my love for Allah (God) musically through Gospel and Inspirational songs.
 

Due to my openness to evolutionary changes, as a creative writing student, I have learned not to be a perfectionist and to grasp learned lessons, and my growth in life as a writer. This truly is empowering and influential to me. In my spare time, I enjoy singing, being a mother, and being a wife. Together with other concerned Camden residents, I advocate social justice, freedom, and equality. All my love, my actions, and my words are motivated by a desire to make things better for my community. Peace. 

Through Rowan College at Gloucester County, I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy degree with Rowan University. The Black Cerebra Empowerment Inc., a non-profit in Camden that empowers residents of my hometown socially, mentally, and economically, is the brainchild of me. I am also currently pursuing a career as an Activities Director specializing in geriatrics and dementia. Understanding music and its therapeutic effects has always been what has led me to express myself in a poetic and musical manner.
