Akindele Dare

Akindele is a student at University of Maryland majoring in Economics and minoring in Innovation Entrepreneurship Business. In addition to academics, Akindele works part-time as a Leasing Agent at Tempo Apartments in College Park, Maryland and is also a Performing Vocalist. With interest in music, marketing, and business, Akindele is currently open to any professional and internship opportunities in these fields.

As a college student in my Senior year I’ve been working for over 5 years but have had the opportunity to be an intern to the CEO, where my previous work skills were put to the test in a corporate setting. It being my first internship it was one of the best learning experiences, as I found out things about myself that were beneficial to the workplace and things I definitely needed college to help me with. Since I wanted to also become a CEO of a record company I gained first-hand experience of interning for a CEO, which also gave me a rundown of what it looks like.  Through the internship I gained skills such as leadership, time management, and knowledge of Lean Sigma, which is beneficial to any organization.

As a self-starter I started and led a project that involved me organizing the workplace using these Lean Sigma skills, building a cabinet and then making sure through visual signs and an organized structure, workers were able to maximize efficiency of the workplace. 

I also took more initiative when it came to multitasking multiple projects that ranged from filing projects to powerpoints, for customers and lenders in a fast-paced environment. When I was filing the financials for the company, I was able to sort, organize, and check-off the documents so the next person such as my mentor or accountant could understand the financial health of the company and make the necessary adjustments. Along with filing were also powerpoints I created that the company would use to demonstrate their goals and objectives to potential partners and give them an incentive to work with the company I interned for. All these tasks helped me gain time-management skills and know the mentality of working at the corporate level. Taking self-initiative was one of my biggest traits, but developing it more on projects such as demonstrating effective communication to the company’s sponsors and leading efforts in organizing the company’s first ever gala made me develop more of a leadership role. 

The Gala also gave leeway to putting my networking skills to use as I was able to communicate effectively and develop relationships outside of the organization, which will prove beneficial for me within the Syndicate organization.  Learning these special skills gave me the opportunity to further the company’s goal of having kids of grades K-5 learn about financial freedom and apply it in their lives. 

         At the end of my internship, I decided to seek opportunities that showcase my creative side of music and use that to network even more. As a musician myself, I used my vocal ability to perform at two events at my college. My first performance enabled me to use music as a medium and not only sing and win out of all vocalists but connect with upcoming artists and people who already were owners of their own record companies and build connections on the creative side of music. My next event included several black fraternities and sororities giving me an opportunity to use music as a medium not only to entertain but to raise funds for these organizations and connect with artists, managers, and members of different organizations.
