About Afrah Akbar:
Growing up in Saudi Arabia as the only girl with three older brothers, I often found myself torn between being confidant and underestimated, sometimes even taken for granted. However, these experiences became my greatest strengths. They taught me resilience, empathy, and the skill of deep listening, allowing me to understand others’ perspectives. At the same time, they fueled my determination to break free from others’ expectations.
With a desire to expand my horizons, I decided to pursue advanced education in the United States. This journey represented more than academics, it was a step into the unknown, a chance to push past comfort zones, and an opportunity to prove I could thrive in a new environment. My drive for growth and adventure led me to take on a personal challenge that many thought impossible: completing the 2,200-mile Appalachian Trail. Through rugged terrain, harsh weather, and moments of exhaustion, I discovered the strength to persevere. This experience taught me that the toughest paths often lead to the most rewarding destinations.
Initially, my studies in physics sparked a dream of becoming an astronomer, captivated by the mysteries of the universe. But as I went deeper, I realized that my passion for physics extended beyond the stars. I wanted to apply my analytical mindset to real world challenges that impact people directly. This revelation guided me to medical physics, a field where science intersects with human care and where I could make a tangible difference.
I focused my master’s research on glioblastoma, exploring techniques like dose-painting and adaptive radiotherapy. This work sharpened my technical skills and deepened my understanding of how to balance effective cancer treatment with minimizing toxicity.
One of my core aspirations is to translate advanced research into practical solutions that enhance the quality of life for cancer patients, especially those diagnosed with glioblastoma. Working on my master’s research in medical physics, with a focus on the latest advancements in glioblastoma treatment, has underscored the importance of bridging theoretical knowledge with clinical practice. A residency will provide me the unique opportunity to apply my research in a clinical environment, honing my skills in radiation therapy planning, imaging techniques, and quality assurance. Through hands-on clinical training, I hope to become proficient in patient-specific treatment planning and dosimetry, ensuring safe and effective care.
Ultimately, my goal is to become a well-rounded medical physicist with the expertise to contribute meaningfully to patient care and innovation of treatment strategies. I am excited about the opportunity to apply my skills in a clinical setting, contribute to advancing medical physics, and grow both personally and professionally. With a strong foundation in research, a commitment to patient care, and the resilience gained from my life experiences, I am confident in my ability to thrive and make a meaningful contribution to the field.
