As the Produce Buyer, you will be responsible for selecting and purchasing produce and specialty items for sale, ensuring optimal inventory levels to meet customer demands and service expectations.

We are looking for someone who can identify supply sources, nurture grower relationships, negotiate prices, arrange freight, analyze purchasing patterns, and comprehend market conditions to achieve company goals.

Your primary duties include:

• Inspecting produce daily at the LA Produce Market
• Procuring, sourcing, selecting, and bargaining prices for timely deliveries
• Introducing new items to the sales team through effective communication
• Cultivating and sustaining grower connections
• Understanding and communicating seasonal/growing conditions
• Arranging necessary freight services
• Interpreting and conveying pricing, product flow, sales trends, and future buying/selling factors
• Examining inbound product quality, grade, and defects when necessary
• Managing inventory and product labeling for optimal turnover and profitability
• Assisting the team in achieving customer service, accuracy, and productivity goals

A successful candidate for the Produce Buyer position should possess:

• Familiarity with USDA grading, conditioning, and storage temperature requirements
• Knowledge of specialty produce attributes, quality, and seasonal growth patterns
• Understanding of PACA regulations
• Experience with Produce Pro software is a bonus
• At least 3–5 years of experience in wholesale produce procurement is preferred
• Capability to safely lift up to 60 pounds
• Ability to work in cold environments, stand for extended periods, and navigate the LA Produce Market
• Clean California Driver's License without major traffic violations
• Strong integrity, ethics, creativity, enthusiasm, and eagerness to learn
• Excellent negotiation, communication, and listening skills
• A passion for produce, deal-making, market trends, and relationship building
