    Internship - Chemical Air Engineer

    Job Summary

    Chemical Engineer Intern

    Project Name: Compressed Air Reduction and Usage Inventory

    Project Duration: 3months

    Paid Internship: The pay rate for this internship is commensurate with the candidate's years of schooling and major. The pay scale is between $15 - $26 per hour.

    Requirements:
    • Chemical Engineer Degree preferred
    • Coursework Prerequisites: Must be Junior/Senior by coursework, having taken Transport I/II.
    Location: Sylacauga, Alabama

    PROJECT SCOPE:

    Identify and collect details of Major Compressed Air Usage Points along with identifying leaks as well as air usage reduction ideas to drive energy usage reduction.

    PROJECT DESCRIPTION & DELIVERABLES:

    Lead the development and initial implementation of a Plant-wide Compressed Air Network Strategy:

    The project steps will include:
    • Mapping the existing compressed air network
    • Identifying areas for improved or reduced air usage due to inappropriate use and poor practices
    • Define plant air network design standards to holistically manage air consumption
    • Developing a program to maintain plant air network standard
    • Identifying key branch locations to isolate/monitor plant consumption
    • Modeling compressed air network using modern flow analysis software
    • Identify response plans for plant shutdowns to reduce air consumption.
    • Produce an actionable strategy for other plants to implement similar best practices
    • Setup key compressed air flow meter
    • Define and execute a plan to improve dust collector efficiency and air usage.
    PROJECT LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

    Following the internship, the successful intern will be able to apply their skills and knowledge to solve practical operational issues encountered in implementing a strategic team objective involving multiple departments across various levels of leadership.

    They will:
    • Understand the functionality and key attributes of major consumption equipment (what the equipment does and how)
    • Understand common issues that can cause excessive or poor utility consumption
    • Apply advanced engineering techniques to identify non-obvious problem areas
    • Incorporate new or modified activities into existing management systems to maintain the compressed air network.
