    Overview

    In the early 1970s, as new school buildings sprang up across Boston, residents felt strongly that these buildings should be used as community resources beyond the school day. This community schools movement led to the establishment of Boston Community Schools in 1972. Over time additional programs and services grew, and additional facilities were added. In 2001 the department was transformed into Boston Centers for Youth & Families, and today we are the City of Boston's largest youth and human services agency. BCYF currently operates 34 community centers and pools. We are committed to serving residents of all ages, from preschoolers to "seasoned" adults, with a variety of arts, education, sports & recreation, health, and other programs to meet their needs and interests. With regard to youth and teens, year round programs and services include workforce development and support, positive youth development, mentoring, sports, enrichment, recreation, violence prevention, entrepreneurship, field trips, and a variety of workshops to support healthy development and life skills. Our teen room is open daily for middle and high school teens to hang out, have fun, play video and board games, do crafts, and make friends.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities

    BCYF teaches and encourages teens to develop skills and habits that support their physical, cognitive, and emotional health. We expose teens to different types of jobs, especially in the human services field, and help them develop the life skills and professional skills they need to be confident and successful in attaining the jobs they dream of. We are here to coach them, give them opportunities to stretch themselves, and make mistakes in a safe environment. In this way, the job they have with us makes them prepared for the next job outside of our "nest."

    Showing a friendly attitude and patience with members of all ages and abilities, of diverse languages and cultures. Setting a good example for youth, using appropriate, positive language, taking care to keep areas tidy and materials put away. Showing attention and focusing on work rather than looking at one's phone. Willingness to learn, to ask questions, and make an effort.
