- Examines patients having a full range of visual problems by taking patient's case history & reviewing medical records, if available
- Examines patient's eyes & adjoining structures for evidence of pathology
- Investigates the state of patient's visual functioning by using a full field of optometric instruments & techniques
- Diagnoses visual deficiencies & prescribes corrective lenses
- Prescribes & fits contact lenses
- Determines visual requirements of the partially sighted
- Prescribes low-vision aids such as telescopic & microscopic lenses, magnifiers & other optical devices to aid low-vision patients
- Prescribes & fits contact lenses

- Examines patients presenting w/ ocular emergencies
- Prescribes medications when appropriate
- Refers patients w/ indications of possible ocular pathology to an Ophthalmologist as needed
- Refers patients to other appropriate KP providers as needed for further evaluation & required treatment
- Participates in departmental & educational meeting including peer review activities within the department & medical facility
