    The Chief Engineer - T&D leads and manages the engineering team. Responsible for driving continuous improvement efforts across different engineering disciplines. Responsible for making critical decisions that have a large impact on projects and engineering initiatives. Develop and foster engineers to think innovatively, hold accountability, and process improvement on a daily basis.

    The Chief Engineer - T&D has highly developed specialties in testing, research and development related to heavy duty specialty vehicles and associated ancillary equipment.

    Provides technical support and may lead a team of Technicians and Engineers. Ensures tests meet company objectives and customer requirements for safe and verified components, systems, or complete products.

    The Chief Engineer - T&D is highly experienced in not only the test engineering role but also Oshkosh Engineering and Engineering processes.

    This is someone who needs very little support for all tools, systems, and process, can train other Engineers and assist with team development.


    YOUR IMPACT:
    Lead a large engineering team consisting of Managers, Engineers, Designers, and Technicians across multiple engineering disciplines.

    Plan, direct, and coordinate business and product strategy to ensure alignment with organizational goals.


    Provide coaching and development for leaders including exposure to workforce planning, succession planning, resource allocation, horizon planning, conflict resolution, people first leadership.

    Prepare and control department budget(s), forecast operating costs of department, and direct preparation of budget requests.

    Has high level P&L responsibility.

    Understand market share and P&L for their product line - strong business acumen.

    Collaborate with functional leaders to achieve strategic initiatives.

    Ability to present and defend technical engineering decisions to Engineering leadership, Oshkosh leadership, and external customers.

    Develop engineering goals and strategic plans for their platform team or product line.

    Conduct the research necessary to be an advocate for new technologies/products that will enable the business.

    Identify and provide potential innovative solutions to complex issues.

    Act as a key influencer in technical decisions regarding new technology.

    Collaborate in establishment of the technical base line and technical engineering vision.

    Help lead the transformation of the organization into modern approaches to development, integration, and test.

    Interface with customers/suppliers to resolve complex technical issues to provide the business with innovative, industry leading solution.

    Provide technical mentorship to all levels of the engineering organization.

    Supply technical inspiration and leadership consultation to other engineers.

    Act as a technical advisor to Engineering leaders.


    Plans and directs the technical aspects of the highly complex research and development programs related to heavy-duty vehicles and associate equipment.

    Synthesize and analyze studies which require application of advanced knowledge in a specific field.

    May provide project direction and technical counsel to subordinate Engineers.

    Research, study, and propose use of new technologies to be used in the development of new and improved products.


    Direct design for complex test fixtures and apparatuses according to test requirements and analysis of engineering parameters associated with both the fixtures and the item being tested.

    Oversees construction and development of test fixtures.

    Supervise and monitor progress of testing.

    Recommend corrective actions needed to maintain schedule and cost targets.

    Communicate the status and results of tests as needed.


    Research customer specifications, design validation requirements, field failures, and government mandates (FMVSS, EPA, etc.) to recommend a course of testing (specific to Defense).

    Perform appropriate analysis and/or tests to ensure performance, durability, and safety criteria are met.

    Survey plans, concepts, and findings clearly and concisely by means of drawings, sketches, and oral and written communication.


    Communicate and coordinate effectively with Oshkosh Corporation departmental staff including Product-Line Design, Purchasing, Manufacturing, and Marketing as well as with vendors and consultants.

    Utilize various state-of-the-art engineering tools, i.e., a personal computer (PC) or computer-aided design equipment, in assigned projects as applicable.


    Direct support of customers and test programs, to include travel to off-site locations as necessary to accomplish assigned engineering programs (specific to Defense).

    May be called on as test subject matter expert at design reviews and technical meetings.

    Maintain high awareness and standard of safety.

    Lead T&D process improvement discussions.

    Lead/Developed Prototype team member safety process, discussions and Signoff.

    Identify inefficiencies related to testing and facility limitations.

    Train others on all systems and processes used in the test area.

    Research new methods of testing, plan, present, and execute.

    Support leadership.

    Maintain a high awareness and standard of safety and develop best safety practices for the team.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
    Accredited Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field with ten (10) or more years of related experience.


    STANDOUT QUALIFICATIONS:
    Experience in automotive or heavy-vehicle equipment.

    Familiar with conducting tests and post processing data.

    Strong project planning.

    Strong analytical and problem solving skills.

    Familiar with creating and managing departmental budgets.

    Leadership experience and managing teams.
