    Description

    This position is an entry-level engineer within the department of Planning and Development Services, with duties to include performing plan review, reviewing citizen requests, performing studies, and providing technical services to contractors and developers.

    Examples of Duties
    • Responds to a broad range of requests for information, service, concerns, and complaints from citizens, businesses, government agencies, internal departments, and/or other interested parties regarding a variety of engineering-related issues. Gathers and analyzes data in order to respond to complaints from citizens. Makes recommendations to supervisor(s) for solutions based on research findings.
    • Coordinates and administers design construction bidding/permitting processes; reviews projects, involving multiple disciplines and design criteria, which includes: reviewing complex projects and making recommendations for alternative design; reviewing studies (flood, wastewater capacity, TIA's, etc.) with the assistance of the Senior Engineer and Principal Engineer; executes tasks as associate engineer by coordinating and setting meetings; coordinating with engineers, surveyors, and contractors; responding to technical project inquires; meets with internal staff and staff from other departments, and consultants regularly to discuss issues and provide advice related to regulations and identify potential problems and solutions by advising the Senior Engineer and Principal Engineer on project-related issues and code interpretations; recommending approving payments/estimates of cost within established guidelines; ensuring conformance with project/permit timelines and fiscal constraints; and/or, performing other related activities.
    • Participates in/on a variety of meetings, committees, Planning and Zoning Commission meetings and/or task forces to provide technical engineering information based on assigned area of responsibility. Provides expertise by analyzing, reviewing, and critiquing development projects and plans.
    • Reviews engineering plans submitted from consultants (engineers, surveyors, designers, and/or other applicable parties) to provide stipulations, informational comments, technical comments, and recommendations, ensuring compliance with applicable design standards. Provides expertise by analyzing, reviewing, and critiquing design and plans.
    • Performs in-house design, detail, and drafting of capital projects.
    • Participates in amending, interpreting, and implementing city ordinances and policies to improve and provide an adequate degree of safety in response to the changing market demands in design and construction.
    • Creates, updates, and maintains numerous reference materials, manuals, and brochures, which may also include forms, checklists, plats, board packets, reports, and/or other related information.
    • Provides administrative technical assistance to applicable boards and/or commissions.
    • Reviews engineering plans in assigned area of responsibility. Responsible for conveying/incorporating review comments to/from internal departments.
    Experience and Training
    • Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Engineering or a closely related field.
    • No experience is required; one year of work experience is preferred.
    Certificates and Licenses Required
    • Must be Engineering in Training (EIT)-certified in the state of Texas within two (2) years of hire.
    • Valid Texas driver license or the ability to obtain prior to employment.
