    Inpatient Medical Coder (Coder III)
    Walter Reed National Military Medical Center


    AAI is actively recruiting Inpatient Medical Coders (Coder III) who are responsible
    for assignment of accurate Evaluation and Management (E&M) codes, ICD diagnoses,
    current procedural terminology (CPT) and Healthcare Common Procedure Coding
    System (HCPCS), modifiers and quantities derived from medical record
    documentation (paper or electronic) for ambulatory procedure visits.


    RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Mandatory knowledge and skills.

    • Position requires excellent computer/communication skills for the provider and
    staff.

    • Knowledge of anatomy/physiology and disease process, medical terminology,
    coding guidelines (Outpatient and ambulatory surgery), documentation
    requirements, familiarity with medications and reimbursement guidelines;
    and encoder experience.

    • Candidates must have the ability to handle multiple projects and appropriately
    prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.


    REQUIREMENTS:

    Education/Certification.
    The following are recognized certifications:
    Registered Health Information Technologist (RHIT) or Registered Health Information
    Administrator (RHIA), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Outpatient Coder
    (COC), Certified Coder Specialist (CCS), Certified Coder Specialist – Physician (CCS-P)
    are preferred who has a minimum of five (5) years of medical coding and/or
    auditing experience in two (2) or more medical, surgical, and ancillary specialties
    within the past 10 years; OR a minimum of three (3) years of medical coding or
    auditing experience if that experience was in an MTF. A minimum of one (1) year of
    performance in the specialty is required to qualify.


    CONTINUED EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    • An Associate' degree or higher in Health Information Management or
    Healthcare Administration, healthcare-related major, or biological science; OR

    • A University certificate in medical coding; OR

    • At least 30 semester hours of University/College credit that includes relevant
    coursework such as anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, health information
    management, and/or pharmacology; OR

    • Successful completion of an American Academy of Professional Coders
    (AAPC) or American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) coding
    certification preparation course for professional services or facility coding that
    includes medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, health information
    management concepts, and pharmacology; OR

    • Successful completion of a training course beyond apprentice level for medical
    technicians, hospital corpsmen, medical service specialists, or hospital training,
    obtained in a training program given by the Armed Forces or the U.S. Maritime
    Service under close medical and professional supervision.

    Experience

    • A minimum of five (5) years of medical coding and/or

    UNIQUE MILITARY HEALTH CARE SYSTEMS/PROCEDURES:

    • MHS GENESIS.

    • Other electronic medical record documentation systems designed for the MHS.

    • Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System (DEERS).

    • Military Filing System - by sponsor social security number, terminal digit order,
    color-coded and blocked filing system.

    • Contents of a military medical record, layout, sections, family member prefix
    designation, forms used in an MTF, and the medical record tracking procedures.

    • The client-server version of the Clinical Information System (CIS)

    • Coding Compliance Editor (CCE) Systems

    • Biometric Data Quality Assurance Service (BDQAS)

    • MHS Coding Guidelines
