Start a career with our Planning & Inspections Department as a Planner III within our Current Planning Division.
Manage applications for rezoning of properties located within the County and eight municipalities and also aid the public in the understanding and accomplishment of compliance with the County and eight municipal subdivision and zoning ordinances.
Discusses with public to determine desired goal to be accomplished, relays information on plan or ordinance compliance relative to land development or zoning matters
Supervise subordinate planning staff or work projects assigned or at the direction of the Planning Manager
May be assigned a functional planning program or work area to manage
Explains procedures, rules, and processes to individuals or entities of various levels of understanding who desire to initiate or revise existing land development or to inform parties of possible avenues for correcting issues or violations existing on their properties
Provides guidance to subordinate planners for work assignments
Serve as liaison to various local, State, and Federal agencies regarding assigned program
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban or regional planning, geography, public administration, engineering, community development, or a related field and four (4) years of experience in governmental planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Management Preference:
Certification by the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) certification is preferred
Knowledge of the County's zoning, land use, and other ordinances and codes, especially in the assigned program area
Knowledge of the principles and practices of community and economic development and public sector planning and/or landscape design
Knowledge of governmental laws, programs, and services pertinent to the community and economic development and planning processes
Knowledge of the environmental and socio-economic implications of the planning process
Knowledge of GIS systems including application of software, hardware and peripherals to planning needs
Skilled in the collection, analysis, and presentation of technical data and planning recommendations
Skilled in conflict resolution, meeting facilitation, and public presentations
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with community groups, federal, State, regional, County officials, and the general public
Ability to prepare comprehensive reports and studies
Ability to express ideas effectively;
general knowledge of development rules and regulations such as environment health and basic accepted construction standards
Ability to read, understand, apply and explain the applicable land use development regulations concerning varying situations and properties

Driving is an essential function of this position. To be considered, you must have a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
If your driver's license is from another state, you will be required to obtain and show proof of a valid NC driver's license within 60 days of hire.
