    Position Summary

The Department of Animal Science's mission is to discover and disseminate new knowledge about the biology and management of domestic animals and to apply this knowledge to benefit society. Our department is devoted to undergraduate and graduate teaching, research, extension, and outreach.

We are seeking a talented individual to partner with a Principal Investigator to provide technical support to a research program in dairy cattle biology with the mission to improve dairy cattle milk production efficiency and lower enteric methane emissions. Current research includes work predominantly with dairy cattle. However, work with sheep and in vitro cell culture systems also exists. The laboratory team is a diverse group of researchers including Postdoctoral Associates, graduate students, undergraduates, and interns.

Responsibilities include preparing animal care and use protocols, maintaining sample and chemical databases, ensuring that lab safety protocols are adhered, conducting wet-lab procedures appropriate for nutritional physiology and biochemistry, and coordinating data uploads and downloads. Animal research involves the care and treatment of live animals (dairy cows and calves, and sheep) for on-farm record collection, biological sampling, and data organization for analysis.

Lab techniques used on a limited basis include cell culture (e.g., neutrophils, adipocytes, myotubes, liver slices, rumen bacteria), chromatography, colorimetric and ELISA assay, and immunoblotting. Data management includes extensive phenotypic and metabolomic records commonly in Excel.

Maintain complete, detailed laboratory records and protocols is essential. Implement and oversee basic training of laboratory and animal handling safety and procedures for new trainees. Work with PI in meeting laboratory safety guidelines and processes mandated by the University. Other responsibilities include general laboratory and equipment maintenance and preparation of reagents.
