    Description

    Job Purpose

    The Parks & Planning Custodian is responsible for maintaining an inviting, safe and clean environment in and around the Park District's facilities for guests and staff. The custodian performs basic cleaning, sanitizing, maintaining and up-keeping tasks. Additionally, this position will frequently interact with program patrons, providing direction and answers to questions.

    Essential Functions
    • Perform various custodial duties, including vacuuming, mopping, window cleaning, etc.
    • Ensure all areas of the facility are kept clean and sanitized including multi-purpose rooms, programming spaces, common areas, bathrooms, offices, and stairways.
    • Maintain a safe and secure environment for staff, patrons and participants by being aware of surroundings and notifying appropriate staff of anything suspicious or out of the ordinary.
    • Communicate and enforce Park District and facility rules and policies to participants and patrons.
    • Provide excellent customer service and maintain a positive public image by addressing questions and concerns from staff, patrons, and participants immediately or directing them to the appropriate staff member.
    • Operated various cleaning equipment and effectively use tools.
    • Report maintenance needs to supervisor; follow-up on status with supervisor.
    • Complete all checklists, reports and paperwork as needed.
    • Return all equipment to its proper place as specified by a supervisor and maintain a neat work environment.
    • Wear a PDOP staff shirt and identification during all work hours. Follow and enforce all PDOP policies and procedures.
    • Monitor facility public spaces and greet customers.
    • Report any hazards around the facility to Supervisor.
    • Report facility accidents and incidents with appropriate documentation, report issues to Supervisor.
    Additional Functions
    • Assist with emergency procedures and building evacuation when required.
    • Attend staff meetings and training programs as specified.
    • Complete other duties as assigned by Supervisor or other Park District administrative personnel.
    Knowledge Skills and Work Experienced Required:
    • Must be at least 18 years of age.
    • High school diploma or GED preferred.
    • Previous work experience preferred.
    • Must have the ability to solve problems as they arise and be able to perform tasks without supervision.
    • Must be highly motivated and able to assume a positive and active role in the park, even while working under potentially stressful conditions (hot or cold weather, upset or injured park visitors, etc.).
    • Must be able to complete required Park District training
    • Ability to work effectively with entire District staff, work with a variety of people and personalities, and maintain a positive working relationship with other employees
    • Ability to respond to problems or stressful situations at all times and with good judgment and accuracy
    • Valid drivers' license required; must pass a pre-employment drug test. This position is part of a random drug testing program.
    • Certification in advanced Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) within 1 month of employment and keep certification current. The District provides this training.
    • Ability to work independently without supervision.
    • Ability to present ideas and recommendations in a concise manner.
    • Ability to understand and carry out verbal and/or written instructions efficiently and effectively and to read and understand printed material.
    • Ability to operate assigned equipment.
    • Ability to effectively interact and communicate well with others.
    • Ability to interpret and explain division and District policies and procedures.
    • Ability to follow safety guidelines and exercise judgment in all aspects of responsibility.
    • Ability to resolve conflict safely, calmly and effectively.
    • Frequently - Walking, standing, reaching, sitting
    • Strength - Must be able to lift up to , 50lbs, over 50lbs with assistance.
    • Will be exposed to chemicals such as cleaning solutions.
    • Protective clothing is required as it pertains to the particular job duty. Examples may include: safety goggles, glasses, face shields, protective rubber or leather gloves.
    • Will be exposed to cold and heat when working outdoors.
