- Serve as a management official responsible for: representing management's view at meetings with internal stakeholders and with the Department; develop, implement and maintain GLS policy; represent the GLS to outside agencies at the local, regional, State, and Federal level; serve as the point of contact for all safety and health issues; and complete all documentation and reports needed to ensure the GLS's compliance with Federal (e.g. OSHA and EPA), State, DOT, and other regulations.
- Evaluate the safety and health program; documents shortcomings; prepare plans to manage shortcomings; implement those plans to close the gaps; and develop documentation including policies to ensure that the program operates more effectively in the future.
- Be responsible for investigating, measuring, and evaluating safety and health factors to protect employees from exposure to toxic substances, harmful physical agents, as well as from injuries resulting from safety and health hazards from high-risk activities such as blind and double crane lifts, and other activities.
- During project planning and developmental phase, evaluate proposed new work processes or materials to assure incorporation of adequate measures for prevention of injuries and/or occupational illnesses hazards.
- Develop and direct a safety education program designed to educate the GLS's personnel on their role in controlling hazards, and in preventing injuries and occupational illnesses. Manage and conduct safety training for supervisors and workers exposed to hazardous materials or involved in potentially hazardous work. Develop and direct new safety training programs and educational priorities based on changes in mission and workload requirements.
