    Quantum Diamond Epitaxy Intern

    US-NJ-Princeton

    Job ID:
    Type: Full-Time
    # of Openings: 1
    Category: Research and Laboratory

    Princeton University

    Overview

The quantum diamond laboratory is starting a diamond epitaxy program at PPPL and there is need for a lot of standard and novel recipes to be developed and characterized. The intern will gain experience in both the operation and design of experiments in this environment, and be able to interact with quantum device experts to learn how application-guided research can be conducted within a material deposition laboratory.

Justification: Diamonds are a leading material for the creation of quantum sensors. The quantum properties of these diamond materials need to be engineered through the use of doping and controlled epitaxy processes. The laboratory has three new chemical vapor deposition reactors, which use plasma chemistry to grow and dope the diamond. In this project the etching and epitaxy characteristics of these plasmas will be characterized and compared with theoretical models as a first step to optimized quantum material deposition.

A proud U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is a longstanding leader in the science and innovation behind the development of fusion energy — a clean, safe, and virtually limitless energy source. With an eye on the future and in response to national priorities, PPPL also has begun a strategic shift from a singular focus on fusion energy to a multi-focus approach that includes microelectronics, quantum information science, and sustainability science. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to make their mark on our world. PPPL aims to attract and support people with a rich variety of backgrounds, interests, experiences, and cultural viewpoints. We are committed to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility and believe that each member of our team contributes to our scientific mission in their own unique way. Come join us

    Responsibilities

    Core Duties

    • The core duties of this project involve loading and operation of plasma chemical vapor deposition reactors and post-treatment sample characterization. The student will learn to operate the growth reactor and conduct experiments with different sample crystallographic characteristics and different plasma chemistries.

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience

    • Ideal candidates will have experience working with or familiarization with quantum-grade diamond materials and their characterization.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Experience with diamond deposition plasma systems is desirable but not required.

    Working Conditions

    • Charge code: Diamond co-doping for quantum sensor applications)
