    ​​Position Description

    A Democratic Congress Member's office seeks a press secretary/speechwriter to join their communications team. This position is based in Miami Gardens, Florida.

    Responsibilities will include:

    ● Preparing and staffing the Congress Member for interviews, press events, and other engagements;

    ● Monitoring and pitching stories to local and national media;

    ● Coordinating interviews and public appearances;

    ● Drafting and editing public-facing written materials, speeches, floor statements, video scripts, press releases, op-eds, newsletters, interview memos, and others;

    ● Cultivating relationships with reporters, editors, and other members of the press corps;

    ● Planning and staffing press conferences and other press-related engagements

    ● Keeping the Member and staff apprised of national and local news with implications for the district

    ● Compiling daily press clips, creating communications briefings, monitoring analytic data

    ● Capturing and editing videos, photos, and graphics; and

    ● Supervising press interns and fellows.

    The press secretary/speechwriter will work closely with the communications director to implement an ambitious communications strategy. Candidates should have strong writing and creative skills, strong editing and proofreading skills, and work well under pressure. A degree in journalism, English, public relations, communications, or a closely related field is strongly preferred. The ideal candidate will have several years of communications experience. Candidates from diverse backgrounds and with Florida ties are highly encouraged to apply. Fluency in Spanish or Kreyòl is a plus.

    • Be a U.S. citizen
    • Be lawfully admitted for permanent residence and seeking citizenship as outlined in 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)(B)
    • Be (i) admitted as a refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157 or granted asylum under 8 U.S.C. § 1158 and (ii) have filed a declaration of intention to become a lawful permanent resident and then a citizen when eligible
    • Owe allegiance to the U.S. (i.e., qualify as a non-citizen U.S. national under federal law)
