    POSITION SUMMARY

    The Operating Room Manager is a registered professional nurse who assumes the administrative responsibility for all functions in the OR, recovery room, short stay services and Central Supply on full time around the clock basis. He/she evaluates the quality of nursing care rendered to all patients in these areas including, but not limited to, the immediate pre-operative stage, the intra-operative stage and the immediate recovery stage. He/she supervises all nursing personnel in all areas of surgery. When surgical schedule is slow, OR Manager will function as a RN house supervisor or float to other departments.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

    Must be currently licensed in the State of California. Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Current BLS, ACLS, and PALS. Two to five years of experience in the OR. Minimum of two years' experience in nursing management. Demonstrate leadership abilities. Completion of critical care class including basic arrhythmia interpretation. Knowledge and experience in the perioperative care of surgical patients. Able to work under stressful situations. Possess good oral and written communication skills. Demonstrate interpersonal relationships in a manner which enhances communication, promote conflict resolution

    and facilitate staff development.

    POSITION SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE MEASURES

    • Direct and supervise OR, post-anesthesia care unit, Central Supply and surgical coordination providing supportive counseling as needed.
    • Maintain high levels of nursing training, care and a safe environment for all patients cared for within the department. ·
    • Review staff performance evaluations.
    • Control quantity and quality of nursing care by reviewing and updating policies, establishing performance standards, analyzing needs and recommending and implementing training and changes.
    • Direct the coordination & scheduling of surgical procedures, coordinating with surgeons and their clinics, registration, authorizations, surgery coordinator, making

    Decisions. Involving cases to maximize OR effectiveness and surgeon/staff capacity.

    • Act as a liaison between OR services, medical staff and hospital administration.
    • Establish OR department policies with appropriate medical staff committees, ensure that they and hospital personnel policies, codes, standards & laws are observed.
    • Share and Coordinate nursing and support staff with other departments to maximize staffing without downtime. Anticipate staffing >2 weeks in advance.
    • Confer with other department managers directly affected before instituting change or initiating new policies/procedures.
    • Ensure that timely staff meetings are held; Inform staff of policy and procedural changes; Provide opportunity for "round table" discussion.
    • Ensure that working manuals for policies/procedures for the department and the hospital are updated and maintained in each department area.
    • Direct review of all supplies, instruments and equipment prior to purchase with respect to cost restraints.
    • Coordinate with the facilities manager and Infection Control staff regarding physical facilities and processes.
    • Analyze new demands resulting from the introduction of new procedures and equipment and make necessary changes in staffing patterns.
    • Ensure that pertinent training and educational in-service meetings are held and appropriate documentation is maintained.
    • Utilizes sound judgment in setting priorities.
    • Maintain staff morale and productivity at desired levels.
    • Maintain Quality Assurance Program; include monthly statistics, quarterly reports, review of absenteeism and turnover employees, all patient and employee incidents, and patient and physician complains with appropriate follow-up.
    • Participate in nursing leadership, and associated meetings and committees.
    • Make daily rounds in all areas of the department to observe activities of sound nursing judgment, principles of work simplification, and economical use of supplies and equipment.
    • Function as pre-operative staff nurse, post-operative staff nurse, central supply technician or scrub nurse. On non-surgical days may function as a house supervisor, med-surg RN, ICU RN, fill-in ED or other Nurse Assignments per staffing needs.
