    POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Perioperative Services Director, the Steril Processing Department Manager has 24 hour accountability for directing the hospital's Sterile Processing Department program.

    Maintains a consistently high standard of supplies, assures that the standards of operation of the department are in compliance with the standards set by regulatory agencies, i.e.

    ANSI/AAMI, TJC, Department of Health and be maintained in a cost-effective manner. Supervises staff and activities in the Sterile Processing area. Has overall responsibility for the sterilization functions throughout the facility. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Plan, organize, coordinate and control the operation of the Sterile Processing Department. Keep informed of TJC recommendations and incorporates recommended policy and procedure manual changes on a timely basis.

    Develops and maintains an effective professional rapport and communication with the medical staff and with all departments interfacing and inter-relating with Sterile Processing.

    Establishes, in conjunction with Perioperative Services, realistic, obtainable goals for the department on an annual basis. Interviews and hires new personnel as needed. Using independent judgment may effectively recommend the hiring, promotion, discipline, or firing under his/her direction. Provides a comprehensive departmental orientation to all new personnel and required training to all staff on an ongoing basis. Establishes internal inventory levels and maintains levels in accordance with set standards and in coordination with surgery.

    Responsible for supplying patient chargeable items to the following departments:
    Nursing Floors, Emergency, Surgery and all other patient care areas. Responsible for crediting all returned supplies and equipment.

    Establishes appropriate policies and procedures and ensures established procedures and standards of practice are followed for decontamination, cleaning, processing and sterilization of reusable supplies, instruments and equipment.

    Maintains continued education in the field of Sterile Processing operations and equipment through education, literature and seminars.

    Provides instructions and inservice on new products, procedures and equipment in a manner that will identify and prevent resource loss and maintain safety.

    In coordination with Biomed, establishes a preventative maintenance program for the Sterile Processing equipment. Demonstrates thorough knowledge of the sterilization process, ensures sterilizers are maintained appropriately, and all required documentation is maintained.

    Responsible for establishing the charge master for all chargeable items, in conjunction with the Finance Department and the Materials Director, and for collecting charge tickets on a chargeable items sent to the various departments throughout the hospital.

    Is responsible for completing employee evaluations as required by MLKCH policy. Attends management meetings and other committee meetings as appropriate. Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Perioperative Services Director. POSITION REQUIREMENTS A. EducationBachelor's Degree; Master's preferred B. Qualifications/ExperienceMinimum of 5 years experience working in Sterile Processing and/or the surgery department.
    Minimum of 3 years experience working as a manager in the hospital setting preferred.
    Current certification in field preferred.
    C. Special Skills/KnowledgeKnowledge of current infection control practices, instruments and sterilization procedures.
    Knowledge of ANSI/AMMI Standards.
