The University of Maryland is looking for a dynamic person to work as the Assistant Director, Radiation Safety/Radiation Safety Officer (
RSO).This position reports to the Associate Director Research Safety and serves as the lead technical expert responsible for directing the Radiation Safety Program for the University of Maryland College Park campus and at institutions under its control.
RSO
advises senior leadership on strategies and tactics relating to the technical and regulatory direction of the Radiation Safety Program.
This position is specifically named as the
RSO
with Maryland Department of the Environment and Nuclear Regulatory Commission radiological licenses and registrations.
The
RSO
shall represent the university during regulatory agency inspections and coordinate the university response to those agencies and others.
The
RSO
is responsible for establishing university-wide policies, practices and procedures related to the safe and compliant use of radiation and radioactive materials such that the program is designed to assure that exposure to radiation is maintained As Low As Reasonably Achievable ( ALARA ).
RSO
manages a unit of four professional staff and ensures high quality programs and services are offered to the University community.
ALARA ; providing effective training; monitoring compliance with all applicable regulations and license conditions; reviewing and commenting on proposed regulations; implementing a security program for Category 1 and Category 2 quantities of radioactive material; coordinating the activities of the Radiation Safety Committee.
RSO
of the Radiation Safety Program, sets priorities and activities, establishes, directs and manages Radiation Safety policies and programs within the Office of Research Safety, consistently improves performance, and directly manages associated staffing, budget, services, equipment and training.
RSO
collaborates with university representatives at all levels and within all departments campus-wide, to accomplish goals and objectives within the Radiation Safety Program, as well as the broader goals of the Office of Research Safety, and the Department of Environmental Safety Sustainability & Risk.
Experience:
Seven (7) years experience in operational health physics program.
Three (3) years experience directing a professional health physics staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of radiation protection standards, measurement techniques, exposure control methods, and applying regulations.
Experience conducting operational health physics calculations including exposure and dose assessments, quantification of radioactivity, and releases to the environment.
Ability to effectively present information, ideas, and radiation safety concepts to stakeholders at all levels of the organization.
Demonstrated management skills for a large, diverse radiation protection program.
Experience establishing broad radiation safety policies, practices and programs that comply with applicable regulations and licenses.
Literate in basic Microsoft Office software, possess excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills, and have exceptional administrative and organizational abilities.
Proven ability to lead, direct, engage and motivate staff.Meet requirements to be a Radiation Safety Officer in the State of Maryland and be deemed "trustworthy and reliable" under
NRC
and State regulations.
The selected candidate must successfully pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical as a requirement to wear a respirator and participate in incident response.

Masters or doctoral degree in Health Physics or a related scientific discipline.
Ten (10) years experience in operational health physics program.
Professional radiation safety experience at a large, diverse radiation protection program at a university or research setting.
American Board of Health Physics certification.
Experience supporting a research and training reactor.
Additional Certifications:
Must be able to successfully pass an
NRC
Trustworthy & Reliable Assessment for being a Reviewing Official and for unescorted access to Category 1 and Category 2 quantities of radioactive material.

Physical Demands
Must be capable of working in temperature extremes and environments that are uncomfortable and that present potential health risks if appropriate protections are not utilized.
Must pass an annual physical examination to utilize protective equipment, including respiratory protection.Must be capable of lifting equipment and materials up to twenty pounds.
Will be required to occasionally work off-hours and be subject to on-call capacity to respond to and investigate incidents occurring at the University of effective University personnel.
