- Develops a compelling and inspirational vision for philanthropy that fully leverages system strengths while ensuring strategic fundraising initiatives are aligned with the organization's mission, vision and values.
- Demonstrates strong strategic planning and execution skills and the ability to inspire and lead fundraising efforts from conception to achievement of objectives.
- Develops new strategies and approaches to cultivate and obtain contributions from a diverse pool of donor prospects, by gathering feedback and opinions to inform fundraising plans and inclusive messaging. Aligns System Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), health equity and community engagement priorities align with donor interests.
- Collaborates with system executives and local Foundation Executive Directors to develop innovative and compelling presentations and case statements for potential donors, including the system history, accomplishments, current posture and impact on our communities.
- Oversees and facilitates strong collaboration with local Foundation teams to support innovation and shared opportunities, while also understanding the unique fundraising drivers of each Foundation and the local communities they serve.
- Builds and fosters a vibrant culture of philanthropy internally and throughout the NorthShore-Edward-Elmhurst Health service area through standardized practices and compelling communications.
- Creates and executes system-wide approaches to high profile, integrated programs that have impact across NorthShore-Edward Elmhurst's broad footprint (for example, research, clinical institutes and workforce development), and develops transformative fundraising and gift initiatives with internal and external constituents.
- Enhances the role that the Executive Leadership Team (ELT), corporate board members, and physicians play in the area of philanthropic giving.
- Elevates the profile of philanthropy and demonstrates how private support makes a healthy difference in people's lives.
- Leads collaborative fundraising efforts, identifies and supports system-wide implementation of best practices, and provides standardized, centralized services (such as grant-writing, communications, prospecting, etc.) as appropriate to streamline operations and support local foundations while fulfilling the philanthropic potential of each local NS EEH Foundations.
- Leverages data to identify best practices and opportunities for improvement.
- Tracks and monitors fundraising progress and regularly reports results to executive leadership; performs analysis of local, regional and national fundraising issues and opportunities.
- Expert knowledge in all areas of philanthropy.
- Proven experience harmonizing the fundraising strategy of a complex system with multiple local foundations and communities.
- Strong knowledge of accounting, tax benefits and risks to charitable giving, and legislation affecting hospital fund-raising is required. Strong financial management skills with experience in all aspects of fundraising including major individual gifts, foundations, corporation, special events, planning giving, grateful patients (including aging and diverse populations).
- Values teamwork and partnership; takes initiative to look outside of own function, organization and industry to create alliances that advance the philanthropic agenda.
- Must be highly motivated to succeed, goal-oriented and able to inspire confidence and foster teamwork, ultimately strengthening, and integrating system operations and services.

- High degree of intellectual curiosity to understand the behaviors of a variety of potential donors and how the hospitals strategic initiatives pair with donor interests around social issues, including health equity.
- Experience conceptualizing and implementing capital fundraising programs and multiple major gift initiatives in a complex system.
- Demonstrated success in raising corporate donor sights, articulating aspirational goals and ideas, setting priorities and closing six and seven-figure gifts.
- Strong strategic planning skills with a track record of successful capital campaigns and solicitations, including the ability to effectively research, identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to partner with top-level corporate and community leaders and to motivate staff teams. Demonstrated success working with institutional leadership, boards, physicians, trustees, key volunteers, and community leaders.
- Proven ability to maintain best practices in fundraising through effective motivation, coaching, staff development and team building.
- Ability to work collaboratively with internal leadership and external partners at the individual and organizational level and the ability to work effectively in a complex, dynamic and changing organization.

In this newly created role, the Chief Development Officer (CDO), System Philanthropy will serve as the enterprise-wide leader responsible for developing and driving strategy to achieve a transformational vision for philanthropy across NorthShore-Edward Elmhurst Health—a market leading and growing system in metropolitan Chicago, nationally recognized for quality, innovation, and both patient and workforce experience.
The CDO will drive the development and execution of a compelling and aspirational strategy to achieve aggressive growth in philanthropic revenue. The right candidate will leverage the strength of our system to inspire engagement, innovation and growth across the System's five successful local foundations and cultivate new approaches to advance our culture of philanthropy, attract transformational gifts, and strengthen our position across a large and diverse donor base. Overseeing the health system's five local Foundations, the CDO will identify opportunities to amplify their impact, strengthen their operations, deploy best practices, and achieve their full potential.
This position requires an exceptional, energetic and innovative leader with a proven track record in building and executing a successful enterprise-wide philanthropy strategy in a large and complex system. This is an outstanding opportunity for a candidate with demonstrated experience advancing a system-wide vision for philanthropy and inspiring local Foundations in a mission-driven setting.

Formal fundraising certification such as CRFE or FAHP preferred.
Minimum Work Experience
15+ years of management experience in fundraising in a complex healthcare, academic or corporate environment. Some prior healthcare fundraising experience is required, along with prior experience in a system with multiple foundations.
