POSITION: Maintenance & Custodial Helper – Buildings & Grounds
REPORTS TO: Assistant Director of Facilities or Designee Maintenance Manager or Designee
PRIMARY FUNCTION: The Mechanical & Custodial Helper's (MC Helper) general responsibilities encompass a wide variety of tasks to be managed both independently and with co-workers, including other MC helpers and tradesmen. Tasks include but are not limited to, all the buildings and properties assigned to the Hartford public Schools.
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Perform general interior custodial services such as sweeping mopping, waxing of floors, dusting furniture, cleaning bathroom fixtures,
· Perform general exterior custodial duties such as grass cutting, grass trimming, raking, blowing leaves, removing litter, snow shoveling, applying sand, paint etc.
· Relocate furniture and appliances between buildings and between story levels.
· Assist tradesmen, custodians and others as assigned with various duties and requirements.
· Complete individually assigned jobs in a timely and professional manner.
· Plow snow during ALL snow and ice events.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
· Must have high school diploma or GED.
· Must possess a valid State of Connecticut driver's license at all times.
· Must have experience with snow removal process including shoveling, snow blowing and most importantly proven experience snow plowing.
· Must have knowledge of basic green cleansers and other basic products typically used in a maintenance facility operation.
· Must possess knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety protection of the trade(s) together with the specific requirements imposed upon workers in the performance of work by the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
· Must have a basic understanding of asbestos awareness, hazardous material awareness and green cleaning standards.
· Must have basic understanding of the use of appliance dollies, dolly carts, ladders, basic tools when applicable.
· Must be willing to respond to emergency work that might emerge outside of normal work schedule.
· Must be able to work within difficult time constraints and under stressful conditions.
· Must work and appear in an orderly and professional manner.
· Must possess the ability to work at heights from ladders, scaffolding or staging or similar at 20' or greater.
· Must be capable of repeated lifting, climbing, bending, standing and sitting for long periods of time.
· Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs. or more.
· Must be capable of working both independently and as a team member.
CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: Non-certified
SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary in accordance with Local 566, AFL-CIO Salary Schedule: 82 of Local 566 ($43,565-$47,471). Twelve-month work year; forty-hour work week. Monday through Friday 7:00 am to 3:30 pm. May be required to work second shift hours of 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
EVALUATION: Every 30 working days during initial probationary period of 120 working days. Evaluated annually.
UNION AFFILIATION: The Board recognized Local 566 American Federation of State, Municipal and County Employees, AFSCME as the exclusive bargaining unit for this position.
